Biography
Lillian has performed as a solo, chamber, and orchestral musician across the United States, Europe, and Asia. She is comfortable in a wide variety of genres, from traditional repertoire to classical premieres to alternative styles. Her recent performances have included solo recitals as a faculty member at Friends University, multi-genre concerts and workshops around Kansas with the improvising Switchgrass String Quartet, and orchestral work with the Wichita Symphony Orchestra.
As an educator, Lillian has taught viola, violin, music theory, chamber music, and string methods, as well as directing string and full orchestras. She is particularly passionate about teaching string students to get out of the box - improvising and playing many styles of music. Some of her students' recent performances included collaborations with poets, student-composed and student-arranged pieces, and more. Her former students teach and perform in Kansas and around the United States. Lillian has served on the faculties of Friends University, Bethany College, Peabody Conservatory, West Virginia University, the Montverde Academy Music Conservatory, the University of Delaware Community Music School, the Bridges Program in Baltimore, and elsewhere.
Lillian has a Bachelor's degree in music education from West Virginia University with an emphasis in viola, piano, and violin. She studied with Andrea Priester Houde at the University of Delaware for a Master's degree in viola performance. While serving as a graduate assistant at UD she fulfilled duties such as performing in the University of Delaware Graduate String Quartet and teaching at Cab Calloway School of the Arts in Wilmington, DE. Lillian completed a Doctor of Musical Arts in viola performance at Peabody Conservatory with Victoria Chiang, as well as a Master of Music degree in music theory pedagogy. While at Peabody, she served as a theory teaching assistant with Dr. Joel Puckett.
